2004 Greek parliamentary election
The Greek legislative elections took place on March 7, 2004. The 300 seats in the Greek Parliament, or Voule, were contested. Costas Caramanlis's New Democracy party won a decisive victory in the elections, thus ending 11 years of rule of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK).
PASOK candidate George Papandreou had succeeded Prime Minister Costas Simitis as party leader in February.
The leaders
The politics of Greece are very dynastic. Costas Caramanlis is the nephew of Constantinos Caramanlis, who was three times Prime Minister and twice President of Greece. On the other hand, George Papandreou is the son of Andreas Papandreou, twice prime minister and founder of PASOK, and grandson of George Papandreou, a liberal who had also been prime minister twice. The Greek newspaper Kathemerini quoted a Greek voter during the campaign: We Greeks like to know where our leaders come from. We feel like we know those families as well as our own."
