The 2002 World Basketball Championship (FIBA World Championship United States 2002, in English) was the 14th edition of the World Basketball Championship. It was held in the city of Indianapolis, United States, between August 29 and September 8, 2002. It was organized by the International Basketball Federation and the American Basketball Federation. After 13 editions of the championship, the United States was chosen as the venue for the tournament with the expectation of receiving a large number of fans of the sport.

After ten days of competition, the final was played, where Yugoslavia faced Argentina. After forty minutes of regulation, the match ended tied at 75, and in extra time the European team took the victory and won their fifth title. Part of the world press pointed out that the refereeing in the final was not entirely correct, and in fact, the same referee Nikos Pitsilkas years later confessed to having made a mistake in the last play of the match by not sanctioning a foul that could have led to the game. title to the South American team.

The champion obtained a direct ticket to the Athens Olympic Games and obtained a place to participate in the official FIBA Diamond Ball 2004 tournament, which brought together the World Champion and the various current continental champions, in the style of the Confederations Cup in soccer.

This World Cup is also remembered for the victory of the Argentine team over the "Dream Team", when both came undefeated to the last game of group F. In addition to that, the American team had been undefeated in 58 games, they were the Olympic champions, and they had a purely NBA team.

Competition format

First phase

The 16 qualified national teams are divided into four groups (A to D) with four teams each. They face each other in a round and the best three in each group advance to the round, while the last four in each group compete for thirteenth place.

Phase two

The 12 teams that go to the second round are divided into two groups of six teams (E and F), playing matches against those teams with which they have not yet played. The best four in each group advance to the quarterfinals, and the last two in each group compete for ninth place.

Classifications for the 5th, 9th and 13th position

The teams competing for ninth and thirteenth place are paired in direct eliminators, whose winners face each other to determine the place in question. The losers face two fewer positions than those initially disputed. That is, the four who compete for 13th place, if they win they compete for it, if they lose they compete for 15th place. Same format for ninth place and fifth place.

Championship

The eight best selected from the second phase are grouped so that the first from one group faces the last from the other, while the second from one group faces the third from the other. The winners of these matches compete in the semifinals, the losers compete for fifth place.

The winners of the semifinals face each other to settle the tournament champion, the losers compete for third place.

Headquarters

For the event, the United States chose the city of Indianapolis as its sole host. In said city, two sports venues were allocated for the championship, which were:
