2000s

The 2000s, the 2000s, or 2000s, comprise the period of time from 1 January 2000, until December 31, 2009. The decade was declared International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World by the UN.
The decade of the 2000s was marked by the war against terrorism declared by the United States (under the mandate of George W. Bush) after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 against The Twin Towers in New York and The Pentagon. In this context, the armed conflicts took place in Afghanistan (since 2001) and Iraq nig (since 2003) that caused, respectively, the overthrow of the Taliban regime and that of Saddam Hussein. Although Al-Qaeda terrorism continued to strike and cause more deaths in Bali (2002), Madrid (2004), London (2005), Bombay (2006) and a multitude of attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It was also the decade of the rise of China as a world power (in 2001 it joined the WTO and in 2010 it became the second world economic power) and the economic rise of India and Brazil, which became poles of reference worldwide (those known as "emerging countries"). The United States will continue to be the main world superpower but it will not have the power it had in the previous decade, beginning the process towards a multipolar world.
The decade also brought the first presidency of an African American (Barack Obama) in the United States or the largest enlargement in the history of the European Union (May 1, 2004), with the addition of ten new countries for the most part from Eastern Europe (former socialist bloc). Also, it should be added that the first Conclave of the III Millennium took place (in 2005) that elected Benedict XVI as pope, after the death of John Paul II.
In Latin America, with the rise to power in Venezuela of Hugo Chávez, Socialism of the 21st century emerged. Fierce anti-globalization rhetoric and his outreach to the working class made the movement spread throughout the region. The Pink Tide was formed by governments such as Lula da Silva (Brazil), Néstor Kirchner (Argentina), Evo Morales (Bolivia) or Rafael Correa (Ecuador). It also led to the creation of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) or the movement against the Free Trade Area of the Americas (No to the FTAA). In Peru, the president Alberto Fujimori, was forced to resign after 10 years of government.
With the independence of Montenegro and, partially recognized, that of Kosovo, the dynamics of the dissolution of Yugoslavia that began in the previous decade ended. Also East Timor became permanently independent from Indonesia in 2002.
They were also years of scientific achievements in fields such as genetics (sequencing of the human genome) or astronautics (the end of the MIR and the commissioning of the ISS that same year). Unfortunately, in 2004 one of the greatest natural tragedies in history occurred, the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia and caused the deaths of more than 240,000 people.
From a social point of view, it is also the decade in which the massive introduction of the Internet and mobile phones change social relationships forever. Leading companies appear in the technology sector that have a decisive influence worldwide such as Apple, Google among others. The so-called "social networks" begin their "boom" at the end of the decade, modifying in a vertiginous way the social forms and relations throughout the planet.
The last years of the decade were profoundly marked by the start of the global financial and stock market crisis that began in the US in 2008 and was caused by the so-called subprime mortgages. Said crisis ended up affecting the global economic fabric and becoming the most important event of the last third of the decade and which will condition the following one.
Summary of the main historical events
From 2000 to 2002
- 2000: First absolute majority of the Popular Party in Spain. On January 17, 2000, the then president of the Government of Europe, José María Aznar, announced the call for general elections for March 12. For the first time since the recovery of democracy in Spain, a whole legislature was exhausted. Retired Felipe González from the general secretariat of the PSOE, Joaquín Almunia was nominated for that party after the resignation of José Borrell. The PSOE and Izquierda Unida, led by Francisco Frutos, signed a pact to present joint lists to the Senate, with the intention of organizing a coalition government in case of victory. The reduction of taxes, the decline in unemployment, the maintenance of stable economic growth and the reduction of the public deficit helped the victory by an absolute majority of the PP.
- 2000: The end of 72 years of PRI hegemony in Mexico. The main contenders of the Presidency of the Republic were Francisco Labastida Ochoa (PRI), Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas (PRD) and Vicente Fox (PAN). The presidential campaign was intense and hidden. As in 1994, the presidential candidates debated publicly and, unlike the past, the authority had the capacity to control, to the satisfaction of all political actors, the electoral roll and to moderate the advantages of resources among the parties. Thus, on July 2, Ernesto Zedillo must have publicly acknowledged the first defeat of his party in 71 years. This was how a period of more than seven decades ended in the power of a single party and, also for the first time in the history of independent Mexico, the country experienced a transfer of power to peaceful and orderly opposition. The electoral result gave Vicente Fox 42.52% of the suffrages, while Francisco Labastida only obtained 36.10% and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas 16.64%. Mexico thus began its new political life with a tripartite system where the PAN was represented with 207 deputies and 46 senators, the PRI with 211 deputies and 60 senators and the PRD with 51 deputies and 7 senators. No party had the capacity to control legislative power. In the rest of the country, 19 states were governed by the PRI, seven by the PAN and four by the PRD, while the municipal governments had also been pluralized: 57% were PRI, 13.4% were Panistas and 10% perredistas.
- 2001: George W. Bush, new president of the United States. In the elections to elect the new president of the United States. On 7 November 2000, Democratic candidate Al Gore, who had occupied the vice president of the country during the Clinton term, found Republican George W. Bush, the son of the same name of former President Bush, a difficult opponent to win. The polls gave as a favorite, although by a very narrow margin, the Republican candidate who after the general count appeared to be reached with victory for less than 1000 votes. This situation led the Democrats led by Al Gore to request the manual count of Florida's votes, arguing that there could have been electoral fraud in that state. Following its passage through the courts, the U.S. electoral process appeared to be clarified in December following the Supreme Court ruling marking the end of the manual vote counts. It was the beginning of the second Bush era that began on January 20, 2001.
- 2001: Advert to the decipherment of the Human Genome. In February 2001, with 90 per cent of the sequestered genome, a first draft of the genetic map of humans was published. The researchers completed the decipherment of the genome in April 2003. The sequencing of the human genome, one of the most relevant scientific events in the history of humanity, revealed that human beings have about 31,000 genes. This presupposes that, contrary to what had been thought of at first, the human genome barely has twice as many genes as the vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster). The first deciphered chromosomes were 22 in 1999, 21 in 2000, and chromosome number 20 in December 2001. Scientists have also sequenced the genome of numerous organisms such as the Escherichia coli bacteria, the Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, the Caenorhabditis elegans nematode or the vinegar fly. These studies are important to know the similarities between human genes and the genes of other organisms and to better understand the functions of genes.
- 2001: USA The U.S. suffers the greatest terrorist attack ever. On September 11, 2001, Tuesday, an American Airlines Boeing 767-300 plane, with 92 passengers, took off from Boston Logan Airport to Los Angeles; it was 07:59 hours (in the U.S.) and 08:45, diverted its route, crashed into one of the Twin Towers (the North Tower), the World Trade Center in New York City, in the South of Manhattan. One minute before that take-off and at the same airport in Boston, another plane, also Boeing 767-300, but from the United Airlines (floor 175), with 65 passengers took off with the same destination: at 09:03 hours he crashed with the South Tower. At 08:01, the Boeing 757-200 aircraft of the United Airlines (floor 93) took off from Newark Airport (New Jersey), with 45 passengers heading to San Francisco: at 10:10 he crashed into a forested area of Pennsylvania. A few minutes later, at 8:10, John Foster Dulles Airport took off in Virginia, American Airlines' Boeing 757-200, with 64 passengers on board and destined for Los Angeles: it was 08:10 and at 09:43, crashed into the building of the Pentagon in Washington DC, headquarters of the United States Ministry of Defense. The White House, the State Department, the UN and Washington's main buildings are evacuated. The collisions caused a fire that affected the internal structure of the two skyscrapers, which collapsed respectively at 10.05 and 10.28. Much of the island of Manhattan is wrapped under a very thick cloud of smoke. The district of the area affected by the explosion is agreed. Following the claim of the attack by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda, led by Saudi Arabian Osama Bin Laden, the world shocked at the greatest terrorist attack in history in which nearly 3,000 people had lost their lives realized that nothing would be the same since that sinister day.
- 2001: War of Afghanistan. Following the 11-S terrorist attack by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda, the U.S. government of George W. Bush accused the Afghan Taliban of providing shelter to the leader of the organization, Bin Laden. The Kabul regime refused to hand over the leader of Al-Qaeda, and on 7 October, with unanimous international support and direct intervention by British and Australian forces, the United States began bombing Afghan territory, in a military operation baptized as Durable Freedom. At the same time, the troops of the Northern Alliance received significant support and launched a harsh military campaign to evict the Taliban from power. After more than a month of fighting, the capital fell: Kabul, and on 6 December, Kandahar (Taliban award). But since the mulah Mohammed Omar and Bin Laden remained unknown, the war operations continued, moving to the one who was presumed to be their place of refuge, the mountainous region of Tora Bora where many members of Al-Qaeda were still fighting. The resistance of Tora Bora ended on 16 December, but Omar and Bin Laden continued to be disappeared. At the same time, and under the auspices of the UN, a meeting was held in Bonn, Germany, which was attended by representatives of all the forces and ethnic groups of the country (except the Taliban), in order to design a new future for the Muslim country.
- 2001: Serious economic and political crisis in Argentina. In December 2001, Argentina was in a situation close to the suspension of payments and IMF credits were compromised. On the 3rd of that month, the government limited to 250 pesos the amount that citizens could withdraw from their accounts every week. It was the first in a series of unpopular measures aimed at restricting the cash provision of Argentines and limiting public payments (employed wages and sentences were, for example, postponed). All this caused the panic of the population and, at last, the social outbreak. On the 13th, a general strike was held by the LGTBI, and six days later thousands of people showed their protests in the streets of the whole country. The president of the Argentine Nation, Fernando de la Rúa decreed the state of siege, repealed it on the 20th day and, in the face of the Peronist refusal to form a government of national unity, resigned. It was happened internly by the President of the Senate, Ramon Puerta, until on 21 the Congress granted the head of the state to the Peronist Adolfo Rodríguez Saá. This announced the momentary suspension of external debt payments and the entry into circulation of a new currency, the "Argentine"backed by all state property. Differences with some provincial governors of their own party motivated Rodriguez Saá to resign on December 30. He was replaced for hours by the president of the lower chamber, Eduardo Camaño (Puerta resigned to the performance of a second interinity), and on January 2, 2002, appointed by the Congress, the also judicialist Eduardo Duhalde swore the position of president of the Republic. A few days after his access to power, the new first president ordered his first measures to address the economic crisis: abandonment of the fixed exchange rate, devaluation of the weight and pessification of the economy (including bank deposits). Although the crisis continued, the government attempted to progressively normalize the financial system; in November 2002, almost a year after its implementation, restrictions on the withdrawal of cash from current accounts (the so-called corralito) were completed, and in March 2003 restrictions on the withdrawal of fixed-term deposit funds (the so-called corralito) were lifted. corralito).
- 2002: Euro enters into circulation in 12 EU countries. During the first two months of 2002, in each participating country the national banknotes and coins coexisted with the euro banknotes and coins, while the progressive exchange of the first for the second. As of 1 March 2002, the euro, in the form of both banknotes (from 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros) and coins (from 1 and 2 euros, and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents of euro), was established in the only legal currency within the twelve EU countries, losing all their value the respective national currencies. That same day, a euro was $0.8671. In July 2007, its value had amounted to $1.36.
- 2002: Catastrophe Prestige. On November 13, 2002, the Prestige oil tanker sank a hundred kilometres from Galicia, with more than 77,000 tons of fuel on board. This caused a black tide that affected the Cantabrian coastline and the coasts of Portugal and France. The ecological tragedy of extraordinary magnitude caused by this disaster was combined with the disastrous consequences that affected the Galician area.
From 2003 to 2004
- 2003: Iraq War or Gulf War II. In the international context of the fight against international terrorism developed after the 11-S terrorist attacks, in early 2002, Bush accused Iraq of protecting international terrorism, justifying, according to his administration, a new armed conflict against Iraq. The threat of imminent military intervention led to a profound breakdown of the consensus of Western countries. While the governments of some countries such as the United Kingdom or Spain supported the decision of the United States; others, like France and Germany among them, decided to condemn any U.S. military intervention as they considered that there was no conclusive evidence of the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraqi territory (this had been the fundamental reason the Bush Administration had claimed). In early 2003, the Bush regime reported that the Hussein regime was violating that resolution, while it did not successfully collaborate with the inspector team, and continued to conceal chemical and biological weapons. In the face of the impossibility of the Security Council adopting a new resolution authorizing an armed intervention, Bush launched on 17 March a 48-hour ultimatum for Saddam to exile, after meeting at The Azores Summit with Tony Blair and José María Aznar. On 20 March, the Anglo-American forces, deployed in the Persian Gulf for months, began a demolishing air strike and the beginning of the Earth invasion. Despite the fact that the Iraqi troops initially seemed to oppose a greater resistance than expected in maintaining control of the major southern cities, the United States. The U.S. started the siege to Baghdad on April 3. On the north front, while Turkey denied the pass permit to the Americans to invade Iraq, the Kurdish guerrillas, with the help of the US special forces. They moved on Mosul and Kirkuk. On 9 April, Baghdad was occupied and the regime collapsed, while its main leaders disappeared without the knowledge of its whereabouts. The total occupation of the Arab country was completed on 14th and the Pentagon concluded the military phase of the conflict.
- 2004: 11-M terrorist massacre in Madrid. On 11 March 2004, an Islamist terrorist cell installed in Spain and with connections with the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda perpetrated in Madrid the most serious terrorist attack in the history of Spain and one of the worst in Europe, in which 191 people were killed and nearly 2000 were injured. The attack was committed against four trains from Cercanías de RENFE that made the Alcalá de Henares-Madrid and Guadalajara-Madrid routes. The terrorists put explosive backpacks inside the train cars that detonated through mobile phone alarms. The explosions of the four trains occurred almost simultaneously in the early morning. Three devices exploded on the Guadalajara-Chamartín train 500 metres from Atocha station. Four others exploded in another of the trains on track 2 of Atocha station. Another two trains exploded at the El Pozo station of Uncle Raimundo and at the Santa Euguenia station. The confusion of the first few minutes led to the certification of the massacre committed by the terrorists.
- 2004: The largest expansion of European Union history. It was the day of unified Europe. From Estonia to Cyprus, from Madrid to Warsaw, Europe was a party on 1 May 2004. Seven countries of the former Soviet bloc (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia), another former Yugoslav with communist past (Slovenia) and two Mediterranean (Cyprus and Malta) joined a European Union that already added 25 countries and 455 million inhabitants. The largest expansion of the European club, the fifth, was, above all, the unification of Europe, the definitive fall of walls that for decades of cold war separated East and West. In Dublin, heads of State and Government of the 25 member countries were excited to the solemnized flags of all partners. Minutes later posed for the first photo of the new united Europe. Unity in diversity, the EU motto, has since been more real, with 75 million more citizens, the EU moved to 20 official languages, a large economic gap (the 10 incorporated contributed 20% of EU inhabitants, but only 5% of GDP). Hence the concern of Europe of the 15. But Europe that day advanced under a common project based on democracy and progress.
- 2004: Historic political change in Uruguay. The Batlle government has been marked, since mid-2002, by a serious financial crisis. Weight devaluation, increased public debt, increased unemployment and wage stagnation were some of the constants from then on. The discomfort of Uruguayan society and its desire for change were felt in the presidential and legislative elections of 31 October 2004. In the first, Tabaré Vázquez, once again aspiring to the head of the state by Encounter Progresista-Frente Amplio, was the most voted candidate, receiving 50.7% of the suffrages (white Jorge Larrañaga achieved 34.10%; colorful Guillermo Stirling, 10.3%). In the same way, Congress-Frente Amplio triumphed in the legislature and the majority was guaranteed in both the House of Representatives and the House of Senators. This historic victory, which put an end to the secular control of power by the National and Colorado parties, was officially sealed on March 1, 2005, when Vázquez was inaugurated President of the Republic.
- 2004: A tsunami devastates Southeast Asia. The worst disaster ever left more than 280,000 dead and millions displaced. The marine earthquake, of magnitude 9.3 on the Richter scale, originated around the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, in the Indian Ocean, and caused a tsunami that reached the coasts of 12 countries, from South-East Asia to North-East Africa. Indonesia was the most damaged state, both in human losses and in material ravages. In fact, it was virtually impossible to encrypt the number of fatalities, missing, injured and displaced, as well as to quantify the damage. Few weeks after the disaster, when the Government finally killed more than 130,000 people who were still on the provisional balance sheets as "disappeared"the number of deaths in Indonesia rose to more than 228,000.
- 2004: The probe Mars Express Explore the surface of Mars. In June 2003, the European Space Agency and the Italian Agency launched the probe Mars Expresswith the objective of inserting into the orbit of Mars in December 2003. Among the probe missions are the exploration of the atmosphere and surface of Mars from a polar orbit and through the lander Beagle 2. The images sent to Earth in January 2004 demonstrated the existence of frozen water in the south pole of the red planet. It was the first time we saw the presence of water in Mars.
From 2005 to 2006
- 2005: World shock at the death of John Paul II. The Pontiff ' s already poor health was aggravated during the first months of 2005, with massive attention to the world ' s media. After a tracheotomy was performed, which spread the image of a Pope without a voice and a certain polemic on the meaning of his continuity at the head of the Holy See, John Paul II died on April 2. His death, despite not being a surprise, meant an authentic planetary shock. Immediately received the appellant John Paul II The Great. His funeral, celebrated in the Roman square of Saint Peter, was the most crowded in the history of mankind. He was attended by hundreds of thousands of people, and his memory was honoured by heads of State and government of more than two hundred countries, as well as representatives of the great religions of the world.
- 2005: Terrorist Matanza in London (7-J). One day after London was elected to host the XXX edition of the Olympic Games, which would take place in the summer of 2012 and while in Scotland the annual G-8 summit was held, which had then British Prime Minister Tony Blair as host to that meeting and also this presiding since day 1 of that month, the European Union in its semi-annual presidency, on July 7, 2005, there was a chain of terrorist attacks that hit the city center of London. At the first hour of the morning, when public transports are very crowded, there was a virtually simultaneous explosion chain that affected two subway convoys (between Liverpool Street and Aldgate East and between King's Cross and Russell Square), a subway station (Edgware Road) and a bus (located in the Rusell Square mediations). These attacks resulted in the death of 56 people and left more than 700 injured. Police investigations concluded that their authors were British citizens of Pakistani origin, from the city of Leeds, who acted as suicide bombers and belonged to the Al Qaeda structure.
- 2006: For the first time, a woman occupies the Palacio de La Moneda. On 11 December 2005, legislative and presidential elections were held in Chile. In the first, the Concertación got 65 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, while the Alliance for Chile won 54. With regard to the second, the two candidates most supported in the polls were those of Bachelet, who aspired to the head of the state by the Concertación (obtained 46% of the votes) and Sebastián Piñera (25.4%), by Renovation Nacional. On January 15, 2006, they went to a second round, in which they imposed (with 53.5% of the suffrages) Michelle Bachelet, who became, on March 11, the first woman to access the Chilean presidency. Shortly after her access to power, the new president announced that in her first 100 days of government she would promote a package of 36 measures including the respective reforms of the binominal electoral system and the pension and health system. The first difficulties faced by the new executive stemmed from the student mobilizations developed in May and June 2006 to demand the reform of the educational system.
- 2006: War of Lebanon. On 12 July 2006, members of Hezbollah attacked the Israeli border base of Zarit, killed eight soldiers and abducted two others. Israel's Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, described this fact "act of war" and held it accountable to the Lebanese government for its latitude in the disarmament of Hezbollah (as required by the above-mentioned resolution 1.559 of the UN), to which Israeli diplomacy directly linked Hamas, Syria and Iran. Israel undertook a strong war offensive whose first objective was to destroy the Ebollah facilities in southern Lebanon. The Beirut airport and the main communications knots were repeatedly attacked, while a naval blockade prevented the ships from sailing from their port or arriving at it. Many people lost their lives in the Lebanese capital, which also suffered the destruction of buildings and infrastructures. Israeli actions did not take long to extend to Tripoli, Baalbek, Tyre and Sidon. Simultaneously, Hezbollah responded with the launch of rockets against northern Israeli towns, such as Haifa. In the first two weeks of bombing, more than 400 Lebanese died, with thousands of wounded and more than half a million displaced persons. The Siniora government repeatedly called for the imposition of a ceasefire, also demanded by various means of the international community. The disproportionate use of the force used by the Israeli Army and the indiscriminate nature of its operations (which lasted until the end of August), causing the death of many civilians and generators of a genuine humanitarian crisis, was condemned from multiple instances.
From 2008 to 2009
- 2008: Paraguay: The bishop who came to President. In the presidential elections held in April 2008, the former bishop Fernando Lugo beat the Colorado Party, after 61 years in power, accused of corruption and inefficiency. Lugo, who stood before the colorful candidate Blanca Ovelar and the military Lino Oviedo, presented himself as the candidate of the Patriotic Alliance for Change, which grouped left-wing unions, representatives of the indigenous and peasantry. The main objectives proposed by Lugo, a former bishop and ideologist of liberation theory, were the reduction of poverty and social inequalities, the halting of emigration to more developed countries, curbing corruption and concluding satisfactory agreements to export the electricity produced in his country.
- 2008: Serious global economic and financial crisis. On 9 August 2007, the stock exchanges fell flatly, largely motivated by the uncertainty about the solvency of the entire network created on mortgages. subprime. It was suddenly discovered that in the United States mortgages had been granted to consumers who did not have a necessary solvency, funded by sophisticated assets that had already affected numerous banking entities and financial institutions, not only in the US. the United States, but also in Japan, countries of the European Union and the entire practice of the rest of the world. Since then, the US and European authorities injected large amounts of money into banks to help them resist the wave of unpaid. Despite this, the first bankruptcies and suspensions of payments occurred. From that month of August 2007, to the last month of 2008, very negative factors were added: the sharp rise in oil and cereal prices, the depreciation of the dollar and a global burst of the real estate bubble. The crisis moved from the financial world to the real economy. In 2008, a wave of bankruptcies and suspensions began in the US. U.S. On September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers, the fourth largest investment bank in North America, broke down. This bankruptcy affected thousands of financial entities and panicked at a threat from a global financial crash. In short, most investment banks had lost more than 40% of their stock in stock. The world stock exchanges entered a period of great volatility, with historical falls followed by high ups in September and October, a period that passed to history as the Crash of October 2008, as in those last 7 days of that month they suffered falls higher than those recorded in the crisis of 1929 and 1987.
- 2008: The first African-American to arrive at the White House. The 2008 presidential elections not only meant the end of Bush's presidency, but also represented the possibility of a change with a global impact as at the beginning of the traditional primary elections to elect the presidential candidate of the world's most powerful country, for the first time in U.S. history a woman (Hillary Clinton) and an African-American (Barack Obama) aspired her by the Democratic Party. Barack Obama, Illinois Senator, with just two years of experience at the Capitol, broke the last racial barrier in the US. The United States, when elected the 44 President of the United States of America and the first black race. After an intense electoral campaign, which included several televised debates for a planetary audience, on 4 November (the first Tuesday after the first Monday of that month, as is traditional) the presidential elections were held, elections followed by millions of people around the world through the media, in the midst of a global interest like never before had awakened the relay at the White House. The count of votes, in a night that was lived as a memorable date in many places in the country, meant a victory without palliatives of the Democrats and access to the White House, for the first time in the history of an African-American. Forty-five years after Martin Luther King delivered his mythical speech announcing his dream and the subsequent enactment of the Civil Rights Act (1964) by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, the United States would choose an African-American president, something that many years ago saw possible in film or television. Obama achieved 365 electoral votes, and 66.9 million popular votes (53.6 per cent), compared to 173 and 58.3 million (46.4 per cent) of McCain. Obama thus became president-elect, as he would assume his presidency on January 20, 2009.
- 2009: Global Gripe A Pandemic (H1N1). Influenza A is an infectious disease caused by a strain of the H1N1 subtype flu virus, in which RNAs combine genetic materials from human influenza strains, aviary and pork flu strains. This is an acute air spread respiratory infection, with the typical symptoms of a flu (fever, cough, sore throat, headache, nasal secretion, muscle aches and joints) that, in some cases, can lead to severe respiratory conditions. The first recorded outbreak of the disease, called in principle swine flu, occurred in Mexico, where in April the first death occurred, and spread throughout the world. That same month, the first diagnosis of the disease in Europe was detected in Spain, and soon afterwards the WHO changed the name of swine flu by flu A or new flu. In June, WHO raised the alert to 6 and declared the disease pandemic. During the first phase of the extension, there was an alarm about its virulence, as epidemiological data on its mortality rate were still lacking, which was then lower than the seasonal flu.
- 2009: Death of Michael Jackson (The King of Pop). Michael Jackson, a singer who had his beginnings in the Jackson 5, a group of African Americans made up of his brothers who got great success. Then he launched as a soloist becoming the most successful artist of all time. In 2009 he planned to dismiss the scenarios with his 50-year-old This Is It tour, before the tour began in July, on June 25 he suffered a cardiorespiratory strike caused by an overdose of propofol, causing a huge impact on the media and the Internet.

Notable personalities and leaders of the decade
Science and technology
In this decade, the Internet has established itself as a vehicle for mass communication and information storage, especially after the World Wide Web phase and the globalization of information reaches a historically unprecedented level. Declining access prices and broadband connections, which replaced the dial-up connections of the previous decade, allowed people to spend more time on the Internet and allowed not only access to information, but also the transfer of data. video, audio and software with the improvement of Internet speed. Social networks, instant messaging, VoIP technology and electronic commerce appear. Since this decade, the way in which people relate to each other has changed a lot, both personally and professionally.
This decade sees several transitions, from basic cell phones to smartphones, from VHS to DVD, CRT to LCD screens and monitors. By the end of the decade, cathode ray tubes were no longer being manufactured for televisions and computer monitors, giving way to the plasma screen and LCD screen. The standard format of the new manufactured screens has also changed, from 4:3 (approximately square) to 16:9 (rectangular or widescreen).
