The counterinsurgency operation included fighting and repressive acts against the guerrilla organizations Revolutionary People’s Army (ERP)—which sought to install a “revolutionary focus” on the Tucuman Mount—and Montoneros, political parties, trade unions, student and religious organizations, and popular activists in general.

  • 17 April: in Cambodia, the Fall of Phnom Penh occurs, where the guerrillas of the Red Jemers led by Pol Pot take the capital and immediately begins a massive evacuation of the place that would be the prelude of the Democratic Kampuchea and later the Cambodian Genocide.
The Red Jemeres led by Pol Pot came to power with the Fall of Phnom Penh which meant the end of the Cambodian civil war that struck that country since 1967, however, the radical ideologies of the new government had serious consequences, one of them would be the beginning of the Cambodian Genocide.

  • April 30: with the fall of Saigon the war of Vietnam ends.

May

  • 2 May: Law 14/75 was enacted in Spain, which changed the legal situation of married women, and the work of the jurist Maria Telo was decisive.
  • May 12: In Cambodia, the Red Jemers hijack the merchant ship SS Mayagüez in international waters.
  • May 15: In Cambodia, the hostages are released by the guerrillas, but the U.S. army, unaware of the fact, addresses the empty boat. On the island of Koh Tang, in battles between the U.S. Marines and the Red Jemers, 60 Jemeres, 38 U.S. Marines die, and three other Marines were forgotten during the evacuation of the island (and possibly killed by the Jemers).
