1950 World Basketball Championship
The 1950 World Basketball Championship was the first organized by FIBA International Basketball Federation. It was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina between October 22 and November 3, 1950. All matches were played at the Luna Park stadium. 10 national teams participated in the tournament (8 from a qualification phase, 1 guest and the organizer). The champion was Argentina, which defeated the United States 64-50 in the final match to finish the final round undefeated (5-0).
Organization
At the FIBA congress held in 1948 during the development of the Olympic Games, general secretary William Jones proposed the idea of a World Basketball Championship. He also proposed Argentina as the venue for said tournament because European countries were devastated by the recent war. Furthermore, Argentina had been one of the founding countries of FIBA with a good team at that time. On the other hand, President Juan Domingo Perón wanted to organize that tournament to draw the attention of his country. [ citation needed ]

Final classification
Note: It may seem that the classification is disordered with respect to the points, but these points have relative value, since the important thing is the classification obtained in the two final leagues, regardless of the score obtained in the matches of classification for them, which are included in the table as mere statistical data.

Curiosities
- Nebojša Popović scored the first point in the history of the World Basketball Championship, in which he was registered as a player and selector of Yugoslavia.
- The Spanish team won a single victory: 2-0 over Yugoslavia. The reason was that the Yugoslavs sat on the court in interpreting the Spanish anthem, in repudiation of the Franco regime, and refused to play. In that team was Boris Stankovic, future secretary general of FIBA.
- The selection of the United States was represented by the team of Denver Chevrolets.
- Argentina was the only selection that exceeded 60 points in at least one meeting, achieving it in three games.
- The player Alvaro Salvadores Salvi, a Chilean born, played for the Spanish selection and was chosen as part of the ideal tournament team.
