From the left, in the sense of the needles of the watch: the workers of the union at a plant of Carnegie Steel Company strike later known as Homestead Strike in 1892; The Plessy case against Ferguson establishes the doctrine of racial segregation and leads to the laws of Jim Crow; the USS Maine sinks in the port of Havana in 1898 that provoked the Hispanic-American War;

The 1890s were a decade beginning on January 1, 1890, and ending on December 31, 1899; are sometimes referred to as the "Mauve decade" -because the aniline dye invented by William Henry Perkin allowed the widespread use of that color in fashion-. This decade was also part of the American Golden Age and the British Victorian Age.

It is a period of clear predominance of the Anglo-Saxon countries (United States and United Kingdom). The first obtained possessions in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans after defeating the Spanish empire and the second demonstrated its superiority in diplomatic conflicts over France, Portugal and China.
