The year 189 B.C. C. was a year of the pre-Julian Roman calendar. In the Roman Empire, it was known as the year 565 Ab Urbe condita.

Events

  • Rome conquers Galatia.
  • Hispania Romana: Pretores Lucio Plautio Hipseo (Hispania Citerior) and Lucio Emilio Paulo (Hispania Ulterior) as his substitute Lucio Bebio Divite died, then replaced him Tenth June Bruto Galaico.
  • The defeat of Antiochus III by the Romans in the Battle of Magnesia deprives the Etolia League of its main foreign ally and makes it impossible for them to continue opposing Rome alone. The League is forced to sign a peace treaty with Rome that makes it an allied subject of the Republic. Although the League continues to exist nominally, the power of the League is broken by the treaty and will never again constitute a significant military or political force.

January

  • January 19th. Date of "Decree on the Lascutana Tower" (Turris Lascutana), decree of the proconsul Paulo Emilio in which freedom is granted to the slaves of an ibera fortress, turris Lascutana, of the city of Asta Regia, which is the first Roman epigraphic inscription of Hispania known.

Deaths

  • Lucio Bebio Dívite, Pretor of the later Hispania of this year, dies in combat with the ligurines when he was heading to his destiny.
