(1872) Hellenos is an asteroid belonging to the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter discovered by Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld, Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Tom Gehrels on March 24, 1971 from the Mount Observatory Palomar, United States.

Designation and name

Hellenos was originally designated 1971 FG. He was subsequently named after Hélenus, a character from Greek mythology.

Orbital characteristics

Hellenos orbits at an average distance of 5,318 ua from the Sun, being able to get as close as 5,062 ua and as far as 5,573 ua. The orbital inclination of it is 14.64° and the eccentricity 0.04802. It takes 4,479 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
