(1789) Dobrovolsky is an asteroid that is part of the asteroid belt and was discovered by Lyudmila Ivanovna Chernyj on August 19, 1966 from the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Nauchny.

Designation and name

Dobrovolsky was initially designated as 1966 QC. Later, it was named in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Gueorgui Timofeyevich Dobrovolski (1928-1971), commander of the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 11, who died on June 30, 1971 during the return to Earth.

Orbital characteristics

Dobrovolsky is located at an average distance of 2,213 AU from the Sun, and can get as close as 1,796 AU. It has an eccentricity of 0.1886 and an orbital inclination of 1.976°. It takes 1,203 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
