(17) Thetis is an asteroid that is part of the asteroid belt and was discovered by Karl Theodor Robert Luther from the Düsseldorf-Bilk observatory, Germany, on April 17, 1852. At the proposal of Friedrich Argelander it was named Thetis, the name of a character from Greek mythology.

Orbital characteristics

Thetis orbits at an average distance from the Sun of 2,472 AU, and can get as close as 2,144 AU. The eccentricity of it is 0.1325 and the orbital inclination 5.591°. It takes 1420 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
