17 (XVII) was a common year beginning on a Friday of the Julian calendar, in force on that date. In the Roman Empire, it was known as the Year of the Consulate of Flaccus and Rufus (or less frequently, year 770 Ab urbe condita). The designation 17 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the A.D. era became the prevalent European method of naming years.
