- King Otakar II of Bohemia inherits part of Carinthia and Carniola, becoming the most powerful prince of the Holy Roman German Empire. By not having at the time emperor, Otakar becomes one of the most powerful men in all of Europe.
- Peter Peregrinus de Maricourt writes the first existing treaty for the properties of magnets.
- It starts in Perthshire (Scotland) the construction of Blair Castle.
