  • 28 September: The coastline breaks for the first time in the Netherlands. The chronicle of Quedlinburg Abbey (in central Germany) reports that thousands of people died. The biggest damage is recorded on Walcheren Island. It will take several years until the inhabitants get their lives back.
  • By the river Estruma, the Byzantine emperor Basil II beats the Bulgarians.
  • In Galicia (northwest of present Spain), the Catholic Normans in charge of Olaf II the Holy invade the river Miño.
  • In the battle of Clontarf (Ireland), the Norwegians, who tried to conquer that country, are defeated by the soldiers of King Brian Boru (who dies in battle).
