(1001) Gaussia is an asteroid belonging to the outer asteroid belt discovered on August 8, 1923 by Sergei Ivanovich Beliavsky from the Simeiz observatory in Crimea. It is named in honor of Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), a German mathematician, astronomer, and physicist of the 18th and 19th centuries.
