In the Japanese script, the syllabic (or, more properly, moraic) characters の (hiragana) and ノ (katakana) rank 25th in the modern ordering system. alphabetical gojūon (五十音), between ね and は; and the 26th in the iroha poem, between ゐ and お. In the table to the right, which follows the gojūon order (by columns, and from right to left), it is found in the sixth column (な行, "column NA") and the fifth row (お段, "row O").
Both の and ノ come from the kanji 乃.
Romanization
According to the Hepburn, Kunrei-shiki, and Nihon-shiki romanization systems, の, ノ are romanized as "no".
Writing
The character の is written with a single stroke. It consists of a curve that starts at the top of the character, goes down and from there describes a very wide arc of circumference. The character resembles a lying 6.
The character ノ is written with a single stroke, which is diagonal to the bottom left, and slightly curved. It resembles the first part of the hiragana の, and the final stroke of the katakana ソ (so), シ (shi), ツ (tsu), and ン (n).
