Ω
Omega (uppercase Ω, lowercase ω; Ancient Greek call ὦ ô /ɔ̂ː/, in modern Greek ωμέγα ōméga /oˈme.ɣa/, lit. 'or big') is the twenty-fourth and last letter of the Greek alphabet. Its shape is reminiscent of a Ο open at the bottom. Phonetically it was pronounced as a long o with a middle opening.
Its literal name, big o, contrasts with that of the letter omicron (ὂμικρόν, 'or small'), which in ancient Greek was pronounced as a short closed o. In modern Greek, both letters are pronounced as or open. This denomination is of Byzantine origin: in ancient Greece, the omega was called ō (ὦ) and the omicron was called ou (οὖ).
In the Greek numeral system it has a value of 800 eight hundred (Ωʹ).
History
The Ω was not part of the first Greek alphabets (centuryVIIIa. C.). It was introduced at the end of the centuryVIIa. C. in the Ionian cities of Asia Minor to denote a later rounded semi-open vowel [.villa]. Its form comes from an omicron (OM) that has been opened by the side (), with arms later bent out (, , , ). The doric city of Cnido, as well as some islands of the Aegean, specifically Paros, Thasos and Melos, chose the innovation exactly opposite, using a broken circle for the /o/short and a closed circle for the /o/long.
The name "omega" (μΩγγα) is from the Byzantine era; in classical Greek, the letter was simply called ō (),), while the omicron was called ou (ο).). The modern tiny shape goes back to the uncial form , a form that developed during the centuryIIIa. C. in ancient writing in papyrus, from a flattened form of the letter () that had its edges even more curved up.
In addition to the Greek alphabet, omega was also adopted into the archaic Cyrillic alphabet, see Cyrillic omega (Ѡ, ѡ). A Rhaetian variant is conjectured to be the origin or parallel evolution of the odal rune ᛟ of the Old Runic Alphabet. The 1982 revision of the African Reference Alphabet incorporates the Latin omega into this version of the Latin alphabet for use in the Kulango language (one of the Sabanic languages), it appears in Unicode with the code U+A7B6
However, it has had little use.
Epigraphic variants
In archaic epigraphic sources the following variants appear:
