In the Japanese script, the syllabic (or, more properly, moraic) characters く (hiragana) and ク (katakana) rank eighth in the modern ordering system. alphabetic gojūon (五十音), between き and け; and the 28th in the iroha poem, between お and や. In the table on the right, which follows the gojūon order (by columns, and from right to left), it is found in the second column (か行, "KA column") and the third row (う段, "row U").

Both く and ク come from the kanji 久.

They can take the dakuten accent: ぐ, グ.

The く character is written in a single stroke with a shape resembling an angled C, starting slashing downward on the left, angling, and continuing downward on the right.

The character ク is written with two strokes:

1. Diagonal stroke down to the left.
2. Trazo that starts horizontal to the right, forms a peak and low making a curve to the left.
