Pronunciation
The zayin represents the sound of the voiced alveolar fricative consonant (/z/). This sound is not pronounced like the Spanish Z but with the sound that the Z has in other languages, such as in Zoo English.
When the zayin has an apostrophe, the combination ז׳ (zayin followed by a geresh), pronounced like voiced postalveolar fricative (/ʒ/) similar to the Catalan jota (day, garden) or French, for example in the name of the writer and politician זְאֵב זַ׳בּוֹטִינְסְקִי - Zeev Jabotinsky.
Symbolism
Numeric value (gematria)
In gematria, zayin represents the number seven, and when used at the beginning of the Hebrew years it means 7000 (i.e. זתשנד in numbers would be the future date 7754).
Use in the Torah scroll
Zayin, in addition to ʻayin, gimel, teth, nun, shin and tzadi, is one of the seven letters that receive a special crown (called tagin) when written on a sefer torah (scroll). of the torah).
Meaning as a noun
In biblical Hebrew zayin זין, means " sword ", and its derived verb lezayen (לזיין), means "arm". In modern Hebrew, however, zayin זין, means " penis" and lezayen (לזיין) is a vulgar term generally used to mean the sexual act (similar to "fuck"). However, the original meaning survives in terms such as maavak mezuyan ("armed struggle") (מאבק מזוין), kokhot mezuyanim ("armed forces") (כוחות מזוינים) and beton mezuyan (בטון מזוין) ("reinforced concrete&# 3. 4;).
It is one of several Hebrew letters that have additional meaning as a noun. The others are: bet [ב the second letter], whose name is a grammatical form of the word ' house' (בית); vav [ו the sixth], whose name means 'hook' (וו); kaf [כ the 11th], whose name means 'palm [of the hand]' or 'tablespoon' (כף); 'ayin [ע the 16th], whose name means 'eye' (עין); pe [פ the 17th], whose name means 'mouth' (פה); qof [ק the 19th], whose name means 'monkey' u "needle eye" (קוף); tav [ת the 22nd], whose name means 'mark' (תו), and several other Hebrew letters, whose names are ancient Hebrew forms of nouns still in use, with a slight change in form or pronunciation, like nouns in Hebrew mmodern.
