La red ferroviaria de Melbourne comprende 17 líneas ferroviarias organizadas en seis grupos y es operada por Metro Trains Melbourne. La primera sección de la red se inauguró en 1854, lo que convirtió a la red ferroviaria metropolitana de Melbourne en el sistema ferroviario más antiguo de Australia. La mayor parte de la red es aérea, siendo la principal sección subterránea el City Loop.

Estas 17 líneas se componen de 16 líneas electrificadas y 1 servicio de lanzadera diésel. Las 16 líneas electrificadas son las líneas Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley y Lilydale que forman parte del Grupo Burnley, las líneas Cranbourne y Pakenham que forman parte del Grupo Caulfield, las líneas Hurstbridge y Mernda que forman parte del Grupo Clifton Hill, las líneas Frankston, Werribee y Williamstown que forman parte de Cross City Group, las líneas Craigieburn, Sunbury y Upfield que forman parte de Northern Group, y la línea Sandringham y la línea Flemington Racecourse. Además de estas 16 líneas electrificadas, también existe la línea Stony Point que opera como servicio de transporte entre Frankston y Stony Point.
