Helmut Bakaitis
Helmut Bakaitis (nacido el 26 de septiembre de 1944) es un director, actor, guionista y dramaturgo australiano nacido en Alemania. Es mejor conocido por su papel en The Matrix Reloaded y The Matrix Revolutions como el personaje del Arquitecto.
Vida temprana y educación
Bakaitis nació en Dresde o Lauban, Baja Silesia, Alemania (ahora Lubań, Polonia), de padres lituanos, Vincas y Eugenia Bakaitis, que huían de Lituania en ese momento. Pasó sus primeros cinco años en campos de tránsito de la ONU en Alemania y Austria, mientras su padre trabajaba como traductor.
Bakaitis llegó a Australia con su familia en 1950, a la edad de seis años. Inicialmente vivieron en centros de inmigración. Su padre, un académico, esperaba convertirse en maestro o conferencista, pero se vio obligado a cavar alcantarillas para mantener a la familia. Bakaitis se educó en Fort Street High School, Sydney, donde obtuvo una beca. Acosado en la escuela, se sumergió en los libros, el lenguaje, el cine y las artes escénicas. Formó un grupo de teatro y actuó en producciones escolares y dirigió, y finalmente comenzó a escribir obras de teatro. Dejó su casa a los 16 años y trabajó como taquígrafo mientras aún estudiaba.
Bakaitis ganó una beca para el Instituto Nacional de Arte Dramático (NIDA). Mientras estuvo allí, formó su propia compañía de teatro junto con un grupo de compañeros de estudios, incluido Jim Sharman. NIDA apoyó la iniciativa estudiantil y realizó una gira por una de las producciones. Antes de graduarse (en 1965), Bakaitis le ofreció su primer papel como actor profesional en el Theatre Royal de Hobart.
Carrera
Bakaitis pasó siete años en la Melbourne Theatre Company como actor y director de talleres para jóvenes, seguidos de temporadas en el Old Tote Theatre y la Sydney Theatre Company. y como codirector del festival juvenil Come Out de Adelaida. Posteriormente estudió un posgrado en Drama y Educación en la Universidad de Northumbria en Newcastle upon Tyne, Inglaterra, y estableció programas para jóvenes en el centro de Londres.
A su regreso a Melbourne, se convirtió en director artístico fundador del St Martins Youth Arts Centre, Melbourne, donde trabajó durante 5 años, y luego en director de New Moon Company en Cairns durante 3 años. De regreso a Sydney, se convirtió en director del Q Theatre de Penrith durante 7 años, seguido de jefe de dirección en NIDA durante nueve años hasta 2007. Luego comenzó a enseñar dirección en la Academia Australiana de Arte Dramático (AADA), ahora el Instituto Australiano. de Música – Arte Dramático (AIMDA).
