Los nombres de 131 vecindarios están definidos extraoficialmente por la Oficina de Planificación del D.C. Los vecindarios pueden definirse por los límites de los distritos, distritos históricos, comisiones vecinales asesoras, asociaciones cívicas y distritos de mejora empresarial (BID); estos límites se superpondrán. Cada uno de los ocho distritos elige a un miembro del Consejo del Distrito de Columbia y se redistribuyen cada diez años.
