Área estadística metropolitana
En los Estados Unidos, un área estadística metropolitana (MSA) es una región geográfica con una densidad de población relativamente alta en su centro y vínculos económicos estrechos en toda el área. Dichas regiones no están legalmente incorporadas como lo estaría una ciudad o pueblo, ni son divisiones administrativas legales como condados o entidades separadas como estados; debido a esto, la definición precisa de cualquier área metropolitana dada puede variar según la fuente. Los criterios estadísticos para un área metropolitana estándar se definieron en 1949 y se redefinieron como área estadística metropolitana en 1983.
Un área metropolitana típica se centra en una sola gran ciudad que ejerce una influencia sustancial sobre la región (por ejemplo, la ciudad de Nueva York o Chicago). Sin embargo, algunas áreas metropolitanas contienen más de una gran ciudad sin ningún municipio que tenga una posición sustancialmente dominante (por ejemplo, Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News (Hampton Roads), Riverside-San Bernardino (Inland Empire) o Minneapolis–Saint Paul (Ciudades Gemelas)). Definiciones
Estados Unidos Las estadísticas del censo para las áreas metropolitanas se informan de acuerdo con las siguientes definiciones.
La Oficina de Administración y Presupuesto de EE. UU. define un conjunto de áreas estadísticas básicas (CBSA) en todo el país, que se componen de condados y equivalentes de condados. Las CBSA se delimitan sobre la base de un área contigua central de densidad de población relativamente alta, conocida como área urbana o grupo urbano. Los condados que contienen el área urbana central se conocen como los condados centrales de la CBSA; estos se definen como aquellos que tienen al menos el 50% de su población viviendo en áreas urbanas de al menos 10,000 habitantes. Los condados circundantes adicionales, conocidos como condados periféricos, se pueden incluir en la CBSA si estos condados tienen fuertes lazos sociales y económicos con el condado o los condados centrales, según lo medido por los desplazamientos y el empleo. Los condados periféricos se incluyen en la CBSA si el 25 % de los trabajadores que viven en el condado trabajan en el condado o condados centrales, o si el 25 % del empleo en el condado está en manos de trabajadores que viven en el condado o condados centrales.
Las CBSA adyacentes se fusionan en una sola CBSA cuando el condado o los condados centrales de una CBSA califican como un condado o condados periféricos para las otras CBSA. Uno o más CBSA pueden agruparse o combinarse para formar una entidad estadística más grande conocida como área estadística combinada (CSA) cuando la medida de intercambio de empleo (EIM) alcanza el 15% o más.
Las CBSA se subdividen en MSA (formadas alrededor de áreas urbanas de al menos 50 000 habitantes) y áreas estadísticas micropolitanas (μSA), que son CBSA construidas alrededor de un grupo urbano de al menos 10 000 habitantes pero menos de 50.000 habitantes. Algunas áreas metropolitanas pueden incluir varias ciudades con menos de 50 000 habitantes, pero combinadas tienen más de 50 000 habitantes. Los términos anteriores que ya no se usan incluyen área estadística metropolitana estándar (SMSA) y área estadística metropolitana primaria (PMSA).
El 19 de enero de 2021, la OMB presentó una regulación para comentario público que aumentaría la población mínima necesaria para que la población de un área urbana sea un área estadística metropolitana de 50 000 a 100 000. Finalmente decidió mantener el mínimo en 50.000 para el ciclo 2020.

Se clasifican las 384 MSA de los Estados Unidos (los 50 estados y el Distrito de Columbia), que incluyen:
- El Ministerio de Asuntos Sociales ocupa el puesto de población al 1o de julio de 2021, según lo estimado por la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos
- El nombre de la MSA designado por la Oficina de Gestión y Presupuesto de los Estados Unidos
- Población de las dietas al 1o de julio de 2021, según las estimaciones de la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos
- La población de las dietas a partir del 1 de abril de 2020, como se indica en el censo de 2020 de los Estados Unidos
- El porcentaje de población MSA cambia del 1 de abril de 2020 al 1 de julio de 2021
- The combined statistical area (CSA) if it is designated and the MSA is a component
