Enviropig fue una línea de cerdos Yorkshire genéticamente mejorados en Canadá, creada con la capacidad de digerir el fósforo vegetal con mayor eficiencia que los cerdos Yorkshire convencionales. El transgén A, compuesto por un promotor expresado en la glándula parótida murina y el gen de la fitasa de Escherichia coli, se introdujo en el embrión de cerdo mediante microinyección pronuclear. Esto provocó que los cerdos produjeran la enzima fitasa, que descompone el fósforo no digerible, en su saliva. Como resultado, excretan entre un 30 y un 70 % menos de fósforo en el estiércol, dependiendo de la edad y la dieta. Las menores concentraciones de fósforo en la escorrentía superficial reducen el crecimiento de algas, ya que el fósforo es el nutriente limitante para ellas. Dado que las algas consumen grandes cantidades de oxígeno, un crecimiento excesivo puede resultar en zonas muertas para los peces. La financiación del programa Enviropig finalizó en abril de 2012 y, al no encontrar nuevos socios, los cerdos fueron sacrificados.
