Alto sheriff de Devon

El Alto Sheriff de Devon es el representante del rey en el condado de Devon, un territorio conocido como su bailía. Seleccionado entre tres personas nominadas, ocupa el cargo durante un año. Tiene funciones judiciales, ceremoniales y administrativas y ejecuta los mandatos del Tribunal Supremo. El título era históricamente "Sheriff de Devon", pero cambió en 1974 a "Alto Sheriff de Devon".
Historia
El cargo de Sheriff es el más antiguo de la Corona. Tiene más de 1000 años de antigüedad; fue establecido antes de la conquista normanda. Continuó siendo el primero en precedencia en los condados hasta el reinado de Eduardo VII, cuando una Orden del Consejo en 1908 le otorgó al Lord-Lieutenant el cargo principal bajo la Corona como representante personal del Soberano. En virtud de las disposiciones de la Ley de Gobierno Local de 1972, el 1 de abril de 1974 el cargo anteriormente conocido como Sheriff pasó a llamarse High Sheriff. El High Sheriff sigue siendo el representante del Soberano en el condado para todos los asuntos relacionados con el Poder Judicial y el mantenimiento de la ley y el orden.
