The Contubernium Marriage in Roman Law

Por: Anavitarte, E. J.*

For Romans, the contubernium or contubernium marriage frames in a generic way all kind of sexual relationships with slaves, whether between themselves, or between a freeman and a slave.

Slaves, being considered things, could not marry or establish concubinage, so a relationship between two slaves, or a free person and a slave would be called contubernium, that means literally cohabitation.

Broadly, the contubernium could mean any form of sexual involvement with slaves, such as sexual slavery, slaves loving their master, or slaves who served as life companions.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English.
